Overview of TotalEnergies Corbion’s PLA Applications

PLA is gradually becoming a familiar material in the plastics industry. However, using this material effectively is not simple. One of the biggest challenges is the diversity of PLA grades available on the market. Although they are all PLA, each type behaves very differently during processing and use.

The Luminy® PLA product line from TotalEnergies Corbion is developed with this in mind. Each product group is optimized for a specific purpose rather than being used universally across all applications. Understanding each PLA group helps businesses select the right material, while avoiding issues such as brittleness, thermal deformation, or processing difficulties.

“PROPERTY-DESIGNED” MATERIAL

Polylactic Acid is often considered a simple bioplastic. In reality, it is a material whose structure can be engineered to modify its properties. By controlling crystallinity and molecular structure, manufacturers can create PLA grades with significantly different behaviors.

Therefore, the most effective approach is not to memorize individual product codes, but to classify PLA by application groups.

PLA FOR FLEXIBLE PACKAGING AND FILM

This is the most common PLA group on the market. Materials in this category typically offer high transparency and good processability in film extrusion. When used for films or flexible packaging, PLA provides a glossy surface and strong aesthetic appeal, which is particularly important for food packaging and consumer goods.

However, the limitation of this group is low heat resistance. At elevated temperatures, the material softens and deforms easily. In addition, impact strength is relatively low unless modified.

This PLA group is suitable for applications such as biodegradable bags, wrapping films, or single-use packaging, where aesthetics and environmental friendliness are prioritized over long-term durability.

PLA FOR RIGID PACKAGING AND INJECTION MOLDING

Unlike film-grade PLA, injection molding PLA is designed for better shape retention. Materials in this group offer high stiffness and dimensional stability during forming. When used in rigid packaging or consumer products, PLA delivers a high-quality surface and a solid feel, enabling partial replacement of conventional plastics in applications with moderate thermal requirements.

However, brittleness remains a major limitation. If the product design is not appropriate, parts may crack upon impact. Additionally, heat resistance is still insufficient for demanding applications. This group is suitable for food containers, trays, or consumer products with short to medium lifespans.

PLA FOR FIBERS AND NONWOVEN FABRICS

A notable development direction for PLA is in the textile industry. The material is optimized for fiber spinning with high stability. When converted into fibers, PLA can be used in nonwoven fabrics or bio-based textile products. This is a rapidly growing field driven by demand for sustainable materials.

The advantages of this group include lightweight properties and environmental friendliness. Moreover, production can be integrated with existing technologies. However, the durability and heat resistance of PLA fibers are still lower than those of conventional polyester, making them more suitable for disposable or semi-durable applications.

MODIFIED PLA

Modern PLA is not limited to virgin material. Many PLA systems have been modified or recycled to improve performance and reduce environmental impact.

These materials may offer improved flexibility or higher impact resistance, enabling PLA to move closer to durable applications. In addition, recycled PLA is becoming an important trend, helping reduce emissions and align with ESG standards.

However, quality control of recycled PLA remains a challenge. Businesses need to select stable material sources to ensure consistent performance.

HIGH HEAT-RESISTANT PLA

To expand its application range, PLA has been developed with enhanced heat resistance. This group features higher crystallinity, resulting in more stable performance during use.

Thanks to these improvements, PLA can be used in products requiring better durability, such as components, technical products, or household goods.

The key advantage is the ability to expand beyond packaging applications, allowing PLA to compete with traditional engineering plastics. However, processing this group is more complex. Temperature and crystallization control must be optimized to achieve the best results.

WHAT MAKES LUMINY® PLA FROM TOTALENERGIES CORBION DIFFERENT?

Compared to many conventional PLA grades on the market, Luminy® PLA is tightly controlled in terms of molecular structure. This enables more consistent material behavior during processing. In production, the material offers high repeatability, reduces defects, and facilitates process optimization.

A notable advantage is the balance between performance and sustainability. The material is produced from renewable resources such as sugarcane, significantly reducing carbon emissions compared to petrochemical plastics, while still meeting technical requirements across various applications.

CONCLUSION

The PLA product lines from TotalEnergies Corbion should not be viewed as separate product codes, but as a material system designed by application. Classification into groups such as flexible packaging, injection molding, fibers, or technical applications provides a more practical understanding. Each group has its own strengths and limitations.

By selecting the right PLA grade, businesses can maximize the benefits of this material, while minimizing production risks and improving product quality.
