Water-based polyurethane resin is a resin dispersed in water that forms flexible films with good gloss and, importantly, emits no harmful VOCs. With a polymer structure containing urethane and urea linkages, water-based PU resin produces coatings with customizable flexibility, hardness, and mechanical strength depending on the formulation.
The product has good stability and can be easily applied by brush, spray, or roller, making it well-suited for clean and environmentally friendly coating systems. It is widely used in industries such as wood finishing, interior coatings, synthetic leather, heat transfer printing, and high-tech surface protection. This is one of the product groups distributed by Vichem – the official distributor of Covestro in Vietnam.
1. PRODUCT APPLICATION
Water-based PU resin is used in interior wood coatings, plywood, wooden doors, leather surface coatings, heat transfer protective layers, ceramic coatings, and flexible plastic substrates. In the wood industry, water-based PU creates smooth, evenly glossy coatings that maintain color well over time. In flexible material applications, PU coatings offer both elasticity and scratch resistance without yellowing. The resin is also used in ink formulations, technical adhesives, and as an intermediate layer in modern multilayer coating systems.

2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Water-based polyurethane resin is typically supplied as a stable emulsion and can be combined with film-formers, thickeners, pigments, and suitable additives depending on the application. During blending, the pH should be adjusted to around 7.5–8.5 to avoid precipitation or loss of dispersion stability. Application should be carried out at temperatures between 20 and 35°C and humidity below 70% to ensure even film drying without pinholes or hazing. Surface drying time ranges from 20 to 40 minutes and can be accelerated with mild heating to enhance drying speed or film clarity.
3. TECHNICAL NOTES
Water-based PU is sensitive to heavy metals, strong ionic agents, and alkaline substances, so clean equipment should be used and the resin kept neutral. It should not be left exposed to air for long periods after opening. When combined with water-based hardeners (such as dispersed polyisocyanates), compatibility and pot life should be tested beforehand to prevent waste. The resin must be stored in sealed containers, away from freezing conditions and heat or direct sunlight. Before use, stir gently to maintain dispersion stability and avoid air bubbles.
