The scale consists of eight wool strips, ranging from Grade 1 (lowest lightfastness) to Grade 8 (optimal lightfastness). Each grade represents approximately double the lightfastness of the previous one, forming a non-linear hierarchy. During testing, the material sample is exposed alongside the standard wool strips in a testing chamber using a Xenon arc lamp to simulate daylight. A portion of the sample is shielded to serve as a control, allowing for accurate comparison of fading levels against the Blue Wool Scale, ensuring reliable and repeatable results.

  • Evaluation: Post-exposure, the sample’s fading is compared to the Blue Wool strips and Grey Scale for grading.

A humidity control fabric (dyed with red azoic dye) ensures accurate chamber conditions, exhibiting fading equivalent to Blue Wool Grade 5 when environmental settings are correct, enhancing result reliability.
