Vinyl acrylic copolymer resin is a water-based emulsion polymer synthesized by copolymerizing vinyl acetate with acrylic monomers. This product combines the strong adhesive properties of vinyl with the water and alkali resistance of acrylics, resulting in a well-balanced, easy-to-apply resin system with stability across diverse environmental conditions.
The emulsion is uniformly dispersed, with consistent viscosity, and can be easily combined with a wide range of pigments and commonly used additives. It is a popular choice in the formulation of interior and exterior wall paints, concrete primers, and alkali-resistant coatings. This is one of the product categories distributed by Vichem – the official distributor of Covestro in Vietnam.
1. PRODUCT APPLICATIONS
Vinyl acrylic copolymer resin is primarily used in water-based coatings for interior and exterior walls, concrete surfaces, cement plaster, and as an alkali-resistant primer on building substrates. For interior use, the resin ensures strong adhesion, a smooth surface, easy-to-clean properties, and long-term flake resistance.
In exterior applications, the copolymer helps the paint resist chalking, prevents alkali attack from the wall substrate, and maintains color durability when exposed to sunlight or high humidity. Additionally, it is used in light waterproofing paints and topcoats for non-fired bricks, wall panels, and fiber cement boards.

2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Vinyl acrylic copolymer resin is commonly used in one-component water-based formulations. It is directly blended with water, pigments, fillers, and additives such as dispersing agents, thickeners, anti-fungal agents, and defoamers. The resin system should be applied at ambient temperatures between 20°C and 35°C, and in humidity below 75%, to allow the film to dry uniformly, adhere well, and avoid surface defects. For alkali-resistant primer applications, it is recommended to dilute the resin according to guidelines to allow deep penetration and enhance surface protection. Always conduct stability and adhesion testing on actual substrates before scaling up production.
3. TECHNICAL NOTES
Although vinyl acrylic copolymer resin has high stability, it may still be affected by extremely low pH or incompatible additives in the formulation. Therefore, it is crucial to thoroughly verify formulation compatibility to prevent coagulation or loss of adhesion. Store the resin in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid freezing or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which may affect dispersion quality. Before use, stir the resin gently to avoid foam formation and to ensure uniform polymer distribution throughout the system.
