Solvent-borne urethane resin is a polyurethane-structured resin dissolved in organic solvents, typically used in one-component or two-component coating systems with fast-drying characteristics. Due to its strong chemical bonding capability, it creates elastic, durable, scratch-resistant films that adhere well to a wide range of substrates such as wood, metal, plastics, and technical textiles.
Compared to traditional resins, urethane offers superior impact resistance and flexibility while maintaining a desired gloss or matte finish. It is an ideal binder for high-performance coating formulations in furniture, leather, automotive, and engineered material applications. This product group is distributed by Vichem – the official distributor of Covestro in Vietnam.
1. PRODUCT APPLICATIONS
Solvent-borne urethane resin is widely used in premium wood coatings, leather finishes, scratch-resistant coatings for MDF panels, automotive/motorcycle coatings, and protective finishes for technical metals. In the furniture industry, the resin delivers a smooth, glossy, transparent film with excellent adhesion and impact resistance. In leather applications, urethane coatings prevent cracking, add flexibility, and resist yellowing over time. In technical systems such as floor coatings, urethane topcoats enhance chemical resistance and long-term color retention under outdoor conditions or frequent abrasion.

2. APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Solvent-borne urethane resin is commonly mixed with suitable isocyanates such as HDI, IPDI, or TDI to form two-component coatings. Once mixed, the system should be stirred well and used within its pot life—typically 1 to 4 hours, depending on the formulation. The optimal application temperature is between 20°C and 35°C, in a well-ventilated, dry environment to avoid bubbling or uneven film formation.
Application methods include spray guns or rollers. All equipment should be cleaned thoroughly before use to prevent impurities from affecting adhesion and gloss. For one-component systems, the resin can air-dry via oxygen crosslinking without the need for a curing agent.
3. TECHNICAL NOTES
Solvent-borne urethane resin is moisture-sensitive and require humidity control both in the environment and within the resin before application.
Store in cool, airtight containers away from direct sunlight and high temperatures, as solvent evaporation may impair performance. During application, ensure good ventilation to prevent VOC accumulation and maintain worker safety. Incorrect mixing ratios or improper curing conditions can lead to defects such as dust retention, surface blisters, delamination, or gloss loss.
