In modern agricultural processing lines, grain sorting plays a decisive role in determining the quality of the final product. Minor defects in color, size, or impurities can reduce product value and affect export standards. Therefore, optical color sorting technology has emerged as a breakthrough innovation that completely replaces traditional manual methods. Among the leading brands, Buhler stands out for its precision, durability, and stable performance on an industrial scale.
STRUCTURE OF THE BUHLER OPTICAL COLOR SORTER
Feeding system and illumination area
The Buhler color sorter is compactly designed and optimized for various types of agricultural grains. The input feeding system uses a vibrating hopper to distribute grains evenly in a thin layer, preventing overlap as they enter the scanning zone. Immediately afterward, a conveyor or free-fall chute transfers the material through the illumination area, where LED lights and optical cameras are positioned.
High-intensity and stable LED lighting enhances the color contrast of each grain. This allows the camera to capture sharp images without interference or distortion caused by environmental factors.
Camera unit and central processing system
The image sensor camera acts as the “eye” of the machine. It captures each grain at extremely high speed and transmits the data to the central processor. Buhler’s algorithm analyzes differences in color, size, and light reflectivity. Once a defective grain is detected, the system immediately locates its position within the falling stream.
The central processor uses an FPGA chip capable of parallel processing of hundreds of data streams simultaneously. This enables continuous operation without delay or missed grains.
Pneumatic valve system and discharge chamber
After the processor identifies a defective grain, a control signal is sent to the corresponding pneumatic valve. In less than one millisecond, the valve opens and releases a strong, precise air jet to eject the defective grain from the main flow. The rapid response and accurate air pressure ensure stable sorting even at high throughput.
The discharge section is divided into two compartments: one for accepted grains and one for rejected grains. The enclosed design minimizes dust and material loss throughout operation.

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF THE BUHLER COLOR SORTER
Color recognition using optical camera system
As the grains pass through the illumination zone, cameras continuously capture thousands of frames per second. Buhler’s RGB or NIR sensors can detect millions of color shades. This allows the machine to identify discolored, moldy, stained, or damaged grains that are invisible to the naked eye.
The central processor compares the captured image with a reference model. Differences in light intensity or reflectivity are converted into electronic signals—this serves as the basis for identifying defective grains within the material stream.
Signal processing and pneumatic valve control
After signal analysis, the system immediately sends commands to the pneumatic valves. Within an instant, a precise air jet is fired to remove the defective grain from the flow. The jet angle and pressure are optimized to avoid affecting nearby good grains.
With high-speed algorithms and ultra-low latency, Buhler machines can achieve accuracy rates of up to 99.9%. The sorting process is continuous, smooth, and nearly error-free.

ADVANTAGES OF BUHLER OPTICAL COLOR SORTING TECHNOLOGY
Superior accuracy and speed
Buhler optical color sorter can process several tons of material per hour while maintaining high uniformity. Its multispectral camera system detects minute defects and internal damage that conventional sorters cannot identify.
Energy saving and reduced operating cost
Energy-efficient LED technology helps lower power consumption. Automatic light and scanning calibration sensors minimize maintenance frequency. Low false-rejection rates reduce material loss and improve economic efficiency.
User-friendly interface and easy maintenance
Buhler equips the machine with a large touch screen, allowing operators to quickly adjust parameters. The interface is intuitive, easy to use, and capable of saving programs for different grain types. Components are made from stainless steel, ensuring easy cleaning and maintaining the optical chamber’s cleanliness.

APPLICATIONS IN MODERN PROCESSING LINES
The Buhler optical color sorter is widely used in processing rice, coffee, soybeans, cashew nuts, and grains. With its precise separation capability, it eliminates defective grains, maintains uniform color, and enhances export value. Buhler’s sorter models can be easily integrated with other Buhler machines such as hullers, whiteners, or polishers, forming a closed, automated, and high-efficiency production line.
