What is a multi-grade engine oil? The mechanism behind the “W” symbol

Multi-grade oil is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its stable performance at both low and high temperatures. It helps the engine start more smoothly in cold weather while still maintaining the required thickness when hot. To understand why multi-grade oil can change its characteristics with temperature, we need to look at the mechanism behind the familiar “W” notation.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF MULTI-GRADE OIL

This type of oil is designed to keep its viscosity stable as temperature changes. In cold weather, it remains thin enough to circulate quickly and reduce wear. When the engine is hot, it stays thick enough to maintain a strong protective film.

The biggest difference between multi-grade oil and single-grade oil lies in their adaptability. Single-grade oil only works well within a narrow temperature range, so it becomes too thick or too thin easily. Multi-grade oil can handle a wider range of conditions and therefore protects the engine more effectively.

THE “W” RATING

The label on the product includes two numbers and the letter W, such as 10W-40 or 5W-30. These values help users understand how the oil behaves in cold and hot conditions, making it easier to select the right type for their vehicle.

The number before the W indicates the oil’s viscosity in cold weather. A lower number means the oil flows more easily at low temperatures. This helps prevent dry starts and reduces wear during initial engine startup.

The letter W stands for Winter and describes the oil’s behavior at low temperatures. Thanks to this notation, users can evaluate how suitable the oil is for cold-weather driving, especially for vehicles frequently started early in the morning.

The number after the W shows the viscosity at around 100°C. A higher number means the oil remains thick enough to form a protective film under high loads. This ensures stable engine operation during long trips or uphill driving.

HOW MULTI-GRADE OIL WORKS

Multi-grade oil achieves its flexible properties through viscosity-index improvers, also known as VIIs. These additives are crucial to the oil’s performance. When temperature changes, the polymer structure of the additives responds accordingly to control viscosity.

In cold conditions, the polymer chains contract. When they contract, they interfere less with the natural flow of the base oil. As a result, the oil remains thin enough to circulate quickly and protect the engine during startup.

When the temperature rises, the polymer chains expand. This expansion counteracts the natural thinning of the base oil at high temperatures. This allows the oil to maintain sufficient thickness for a durable protective film.

This temperature-responsive polymer mechanism keeps the oil stable under different operating conditions. The oil does not become overly thin when hot, reducing friction between metal surfaces. This improves engine longevity and efficiency.

BENEFITS OF USING MULTI-GRADE OIL

It helps the engine start more easily in cold weather. Thin oil circulates quickly, allowing the oil pump to work more efficiently and distribute oil evenly. This prevents dry starts and reduces early-stage wear.

Its high-temperature protection is another major advantage. Stable viscosity ensures a strong oil film under heavy loads. This keeps the engine running smoothly and reduces wear.

Multi-grade oil also improves fuel efficiency. Lower internal friction allows components to move more freely. The engine uses less energy to overcome resistance, optimizing fuel consumption.

Regular use of multi-grade oil also extends engine life. Because the oil remains stable under varying conditions, it reduces the risk of thermal wear and mechanical damage. This makes it a suitable choice for vehicles driven frequently or in variable conditions.
