What is a Bio-based Solvent? Applications in Industrial Production

Solvents are indispensable materials in modern industrial production. From coatings and printing to cleaning and pharmaceuticals, solvents play a key role in almost every process. However, most conventional solvents derived from petrochemicals cause pollution, toxic emissions, and health risks.

As industries demand safer and more sustainable solutions, bio-based solvents have emerged as an alternative. With natural origins, lower toxicity, and biodegradability, they are increasingly favored across multiple industrial sectors.

WHAT IS A BIO-BASED SOLVENT?

Definition and examples

A bio-based solvent (also known as a green solvent) is produced from renewable feedstocks. They are derived from biomass sources such as starch, cellulose, vegetable oils, sugarcane, or agricultural by-products. Their standout features include natural biodegradability, low pollution impact, and safer use compared to petrochemical solvents.

Common examples include Ethyl lactate, d-Limonene, Methyl soyate, Dimethyl carbonate (DMC), Ethanol, and 2-Methyl THF. These solvents are often mild in odor, slower to evaporate, and less toxic, providing safer conditions for workers and the environment alike.

Comparison with petrochemical solvents

Petrochemical solvents like toluene, xylene, and MEK once dominated industry. Yet they are highly volatile, toxic, and a major source of VOC emissions. By contrast, bio-based solvents reduce risks, are eco-friendly, and align with global sustainable development goals.

Advantages of bio-based solvents

First, they help cut VOC and CO₂ emissions during production. This is crucial for companies seeking compliance with increasingly strict environmental regulations. In addition, natural solvents protect worker health and lower the risk of occupational illness.

Bio-based solvents are also easier to treat in wastewater and exhaust streams, saving on operating costs. Products using certified green solvents often meet international standards such as LEED or Green Label, boosting corporate reputation and brand value.

APPLICATIONS OF BIO-BASED SOLVENTS IN INDUSTRY

Coatings industry

Bio-based solvents replace toluene and xylene in water-based paints, PU, and epoxy systems. They not only reduce VOC emissions but also improve workplace safety, minimize odors, and lower fire hazards.

Printing industry

In printing, bio-based solvents are ideal for water-based inks. They are also used for cleaning printing plates, increasing production efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

Industrial cleaning

A standout use is as cleaning agents for metals, plastic molds, and electronic circuit boards. With natural biodegradability, they leave no harmful residues after cleaning.

Adhesives

Bio-based solvents act as evaporation solvents in PU and acrylic adhesives. Replacing petrochemical solvents ensures safer end products for both consumers and the environment.

Bioplastics

In producing PLA and PHA—types of biodegradable plastics—bio-based solvents are used as diluents or reaction media. They are a vital link in driving the bioplastics industry forward.

Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics

With low toxicity and safety advantages, bio-based solvents are applied in extracting essential oils and natural flavors. They also serve as pharmaceutical excipients and carriers in lotions, creams, and other formulations, ensuring both safety and quality.

OUTLOOK FOR BIO-BASED SOLVENTS IN INDUSTRY

The demand for bio-based solvents is forecast to rise sharply in the coming decade. Strict environmental regulations require industries to cut emissions and adopt greener production methods.

At the same time, advances in biotechnology and renewable raw materials are making bio-based solvents more cost-competitive. This creates a foundation for gradually replacing petrochemical solvents and expanding into key industrial markets.

Bio-based solvents not only deliver economic value but also contribute to global sustainability goals. In line with the trend toward green globalization, they will be a crucial driver of the circular economy in the future.
