In modern industries, product surfaces often face dust, grease, algae, and microorganisms. These factors accelerate wear, complicate cleaning, and increase maintenance costs. To address this, scientists developed anti-fouling materials.
WHAT ARE ANTI-FOULING MATERIALS?
This group includes materials or coatings that prevent unwanted substances from adhering to surfaces. They not only resist dust and oil but also limit water, salt, bacteria, and algae. For this reason, they are applied in diverse fields such as ship coatings, interior design, electronics, medical devices, and solar panels.

PRINCIPLES OF ANTI-FOULING PERFORMANCE
There are two main working mechanisms: passive and active. They are often combined to ensure long-lasting resistance in harsh conditions.
Passive mechanism relies on physical properties. Superhydrophobic designs with contact angles above 150° make it difficult for particles to stick. Much like lotus leaves, water and dirt simply slide off.
Acrive mechanism relies on chemical reactions. Some coatings act as photocatalysts, decomposing organic matter when exposed to UV light. This allows surfaces not only to resist fouling but also to self-clean.

KEY TECHNOLOGIES AND MATERIALS
SiO₂ Superhydrophobic
Using nanostructures, these coatings achieve contact angles above 150°. Water and dust cannot remain attached, making them common in self-cleaning glass, solar panels, and outdoor surfaces.
Fluoropolymer (PTFE)
Renowned for excellent water and oil repellence, PTFE creates a smooth non-stick surface. It is widely used in industrial coatings, medical devices, and chemical-resistant applications.
Silicone Coatings
These produce a soft, flexible film with moderate resistance but easy cleaning. They are applied in ship hulls, interiors, and laboratories requiring hygiene.
Photocatalytic TiO₂:
Activated by UV light, TiO₂ generates radicals that decompose organics, bacteria, and grime. This technology is applied in self-cleaning glass, facades, and outdoor billboards.
Polyurethane và Acrylate kết hợp phụ gia
When combined with fluoropolymers or silicone, these systems deliver strong resistance. They are preferred for furniture, wood coatings, and exterior surfaces. Covestro has developed advanced 2K waterborne polyurethane systems (Bayhydrol A with Bayhydur) that achieve outstanding anti-fouling performance. Enhanced with fluoropolymer or silicone, these become easy-to-clean coatings for interiors, exteriors, and industrial applications.

APPLICATIONS IN MANUFACTURING AND MARITIME
Industrial Production
Anti-fouling solutions are now indispensable in manufacturing. In industrial machinery, coatings block grease, dust, and chemicals, simplifying cleaning and extending equipment life. In plastic molds and extrusion tools, they minimize polymer residue, reduce defects, and improve efficiency.
For conveyors, silos, and hoppers, these coatings prevent powders, grains, or cement from sticking, ensuring smooth flow and reliable operation. Solar panels and industrial glass also benefit. With self-cleaning coatings, energy absorption is maximized while maintenance costs are lowered.
Maritime Applications
The maritime sector is one of the most demanding fields for these technologies. Ship hulls constantly face algae and marine organisms. Their presence increases drag, leading to higher fuel consumption. With anti-fouling coatings, drag is minimized, fuel savings can reach 40%, and CO₂ emissions are reduced. Propellers and blades need protection as well. Growth buildup reduces efficiency, causing vibration and energy waste. Coatings maintain balance and extend service life.
Sensors and sonar devices demand clear surfaces for accurate signals, and anti-fouling coatings ensure stable operation. Fishing boats, canoes, and yachts also benefit with reduced fouling, higher cruising speed, and less frequent cleaning. Global brands like Hempel with Silic One and International with Intersleek have commercialized advanced systems. Covestro’s waterborne PU combined with fluor siloxane offers sustainable and effective protection for marine vessels
