TBN Alkalinity in Lubricants: Meaning and Control

TBN alkalinity is one of the most critical parameters when evaluating lubricant quality. It measures the ability to neutralize acids formed during engine operation and lubrication. A proper index helps protect metal surfaces, reduce corrosion, and maintain oil life. Understanding the meaning of TBN and how to control it provides significant benefits for both manufacturers and operators.

MEANING OF TBN ALKALINITY IN LUBRICANTS

Definition and function of TBN

TBN represents the number of milligrams of KOH required to neutralize the acids in one gram of lubricant. The standard unit is mg KOH/g. This figure reflects the oil’s ability to maintain an alkaline environment and its protective level against acids generated during operation. In principle, the higher the TBN, the stronger the resistance against corrosion.

In practice, fuel combustion produces sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides. These compounds combine with water to form acids that corrode metal surfaces. TBN enables lubricants to neutralize them in time, thereby reducing damage and protecting engine components. This also extends oil life and reduces maintenance costs.

When high or low TBN is required

Not every engine requires the same TBN level. For heavy-duty diesel engines running on high-sulfur fuels, lubricants with high TBN values between 10–15 are suitable. They balance the large amounts of acid produced and secure durability in harsh environments.

Conversely, in modern gasoline engines or systems using cleaner fuels, lubricants only need a TBN of about 6–8. This level is sufficient to counteract minor acid formation without excess alkalinity. Choosing an unsuitable TBN poses risks: too low leads to corrosion, while too high may cause deposits and negatively affect combustion.

HOW TO CONTROL AND MONITOR TBN

Regular oil analysis and monitoring TBN decline

Controlling TBN requires multiple steps. The first is regular oil analysis using standard titration methods such as ASTM D2896 or ASTM D4739. Results indicate the rate of TBN decline and help predict proper oil change intervals. Another key factor is tracking the relationship between TBN and TAN. While TBN reflects neutralizing capacity, TAN (Total Acid Number) shows the acid build-up in the oil. A sharp TAN increase with rapid TBN drop is clear evidence of oil aging. The usual replacement threshold is when TBN decreases to about 50% of its original value.

Choosing the right lubricant

In addition to regular analysis, selecting a lubricant with a suitable initial TBN is essential. For heavy-duty diesel engines or harsh conditions, high TBN oils are necessary. For gasoline engines or passenger cars, mid-range TBN oils maintain smooth operation. In some industrial systems, alkaline additives can be added to sustain neutralizing power without replacing the entire oil volume. This ensures reliable engine and lubrication performance.

CONSEQUENCES OF LOW TBN

If TBN drops too low, engines face serious risks. Residual acids start attacking metal surfaces, corroding bearings, pistons, and cylinder walls. Once the protective layer is gone, the engine deteriorates quickly. Lubricants also lose protective and lubricating properties, leading to increased friction. Higher operating temperatures shorten oil life significantly. The final result is machine downtime, costly repairs, and production delays.

For businesses, this is not only a technical issue but also a financial risk. Unexpected shutdowns can interrupt entire production lines. Therefore, monitoring TBN not only protects engines but also helps companies save on long-term operating costs.
