In the adhesive industry, thermoplastic systems are widely used for their fast processing, strong bonding, and heat reactivation capability. However, to meet increasing demands for durability, flexibility, and environmental safety, adhesive polymers must be continuously improved. Among these, PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) stands out as both a film-forming agent and a bonding enhancer, improving adhesion and re-bonding performance in thermoplastic adhesives.
PROPERTIES OF PVA IN THERMOPLASTIC ADHESIVES
Molecular structure and bonding mechanism
PVA is synthesized from polyvinyl acetate through hydrolysis, containing multiple hydroxyl (-OH) groups that create strong hydrogen bonds with polar surfaces such as paper, wood, or plastics. This molecular structure provides durable bonding and excellent mechanical stability. Its linear chain and high crystallinity contribute to clear, strong adhesive films with superior tensile strength.
Application and compatibility with base polymers
In thermoplastic adhesives, PVA is often blended with EVA, PVAc, or TPU to increase flexibility and reduce brittleness under heat. Its strong compatibility with these polymers ensures stable film properties and consistent adhesion across diverse substrates. Due to this versatility, PVA is widely applied in laminated packaging, technical textiles, and composite materials.

ACTIVATION MECHANISM OF PVA UNDER HEAT
Phase transition and new bond formation
When heated, PVA transitions from a solid to a soft, elastic state. Thermal energy loosens intramolecular forces, allowing polymer chains to move freely and form new hydrogen bonds with the base polymer and the substrate surface. This activation process enhances bonding strength and maintains adhesion even under temperature variations.
Factors affecting activation efficiency
Activation efficiency depends on the degree of hydrolysis, molecular weight, and blending ratio. Highly hydrolyzed PVA (98–99%) provides stronger adhesion but dissolves more slowly, suitable for high-strength applications. Lower-hydrolysis PVA, on the other hand, blends more easily and activates faster during heating, improving process speed and flexibility.

RE-BONDING AND STABILITY OF PVA-BASED ADHESIVES
PVA offers exceptional re-bonding capability. Once cooled, the adhesive can be reheated to restore hydrogen bonds, allowing two surfaces to rejoin without additional adhesive. This feature reduces material waste, lowers cost, and enhances production efficiency. In packaging, PVA-based adhesives enable multiple sealing cycles while maintaining air-tightness and mechanical integrity.
Moreover, PVA preserves transparency, elasticity, and crack resistance even after repeated heat cycles. Its structural stability ensures consistent performance in multilayer films and shrinkable materials that require strong, flexible bonding.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS AND APPLICATION TRENDS
PVA is recognized as an environmentally friendly polymer — VOC-free, odorless, and biodegradable. Compared with solvent-based systems, thermoplastic adhesives containing PVA are safer for workers and significantly reduce emissions. The global trend toward “green adhesives” places PVA at the center, as it replaces less sustainable synthetic polymers.
Leading manufacturers like Sinopec have developed specialized PVA grades with tailored hydrolysis levels to suit food packaging, recycling adhesives, and biodegradable materials. In Vietnam, Vichem provides high-performance PVA products and technical consultation to help manufacturers improve productivity and transition toward sustainable production.
