Solvent-based polyester resin is a synthetic resin produced from the reaction between polyacid and polyol, dissolved in organic solvents. This resin type typically provides fast film formation, good gloss, and strong adhesion on various substrates such as wood, metal, or engineering plastics. With its linear or branched flexible structure, polyester allows adjustment of hardness, flexibility, and chemical resistance according to formulation requirements. It is widely used in 1K or 2K industrial coating systems due to its stability, ease of application, and cost-effectiveness. 1. PRODUCT APPLICATION
Solvent-based polyester resin is commonly used as the main resin in metal coatings, wood coatings, industrial interior paints, or primers for automotive and coil coatings. In the wood industry, polyester forms hard, tightly adhering, and glossy films suitable for PU or NC paint systems. In metal coatings, polyester can be combined with isocyanate hardeners to enhance mechanical strength, weather resistance, and color durability. Some formulations use modified polyester with acrylic or alkyd to improve system compatibility and stability.
2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Solvent-based polyester resin is usually supplied as a liquid with standard viscosity and can be used directly in paint formulations with pigments, additives, and compatible solvents. Mixing ratios depend on the specific application, but viscosity must remain stable for spray or roller application. Ideal application temperature is between 20 and 35°C in well-ventilated conditions and humidity below 75% to avoid defects such as sagging or uneven drying. In 2K systems, it must be combined in the correct ratio with suitable isocyanates to enable stable crosslinking reactions.
3. TECHNICAL NOTES
When using solvent-based polyester resin, compatibility with pigments and fillers must be ensured to prevent precipitation or phase separation. The resin should be stored in sealed containers, away from direct sunlight and high temperatures to avoid solvent evaporation or viscosity changes. Once opened, it should be used promptly or resealed immediately to maintain quality. During application, equipment must be clean and the resin thoroughly stirred to avoid inconsistencies in gloss or color uniformity of the final coating.
