Solvent-based alkyd resin is a synthetic resin made from polyol, fatty acids, and organic acids, dissolved in organic solvents such as xylene or white spirit. This is a traditional resin widely used in the paint industry, especially in wood coatings, metal coatings, and decorative industrial paints. Alkyd resin can cure in air or with catalysts, forming coating films with strong adhesion, good gloss, and stable color durability. With reasonable cost and proven performance over time, alkyd resin remains a popular choice in many domestic and export paint manufacturing facilities. This is one of the product groups distributed by Vichem – the official distributor of Covestro in Vietnam.
1. PRODUCT APPLICATION
Solvent-based alkyd resin is commonly used in oil-based paints, light industrial coatings, and topcoats for wood, steel, doors, frames, or household equipment. In the wood industry, alkyd provides smooth, semi-glossy films that are easy to apply by brush or roller with consistent color appearance. In metal applications, alkyd coatings offer good adhesion and withstand mild environmental conditions such as rain, dust, and humidity, making them suitable for interiors or surfaces that do not require high corrosion resistance. Some modified alkyd types are also used to accelerate drying or enhance gloss in 1K paint systems.
2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
When using solvent-based alkyd resin in paint formulation, the resin, pigment, and solvent ratios must be controlled to achieve viscosity suitable for the application method. Alkyd resin is typically used in 1K systems and can cure upon air exposure, so pot life must be managed accordingly after mixing. The recommended application temperature is from 20 to 35°C in a well-ventilated area with limited dust and humidity to prevent hazing. Compatible solvents such as toluene, xylene, or white spirit should be selected based on the specific formulation.
3. TECHNICAL NOTES
With solvent-based alkyd resin, surface drying time usually ranges from 30 minutes to 2 hours, and full cure can be reached within 24 hours depending on the oil type and application conditions. The resin should be stored in sealed containers, away from direct sunlight and high temperatures to avoid solvent evaporation or resin degradation. After opening, the product should be used quickly to prevent skin formation on the surface. When handling alkyd resin, gloves and masks should be worn since solvent systems may cause irritation upon prolonged exposure.
