Solvent-based acrylic resin is a type of synthetic resin dissolved in organic solvents such as toluene, xylene, or butyl acetate, forming 1K or 2K systems with fast-drying capability and the ability to create clear, glossy, and durable films. This resin type typically has medium to high molecular weight, allowing good control over viscosity and film formation in industrial application conditions. Compared to water-based acrylics, solvent-based systems provide a more uniform surface finish, easier processing, and better weather resistance in harsh conditions.
Thanks to their fast-drying properties and natural gloss, these products are widely used in wood coatings, metal coatings, plastic finishes, and automotive paints. This is one of the product groups distributed by Vichem – the official distributor of Covestro in Vietnam.
1. PRODUCT APPLICATION
Solvent-based acrylic resin is a common choice in formulations for interior decorative wood coatings, mechanical metal coatings, motorcycle paints, electronic parts, and high-gloss industrial coatings. In the wood industry, this resin helps coatings maintain clarity, accurate color, and reduced yellowing over time. In the metal sector, the cured film offers scratch resistance, weather durability, and avoids cracking under temperature changes. Some acrylic grades can be combined with alkyd, nitrocellulose, or polyester resins to enhance flexibility and compatibility in various coating formulas.

2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Solvent-based acrylic resin are usually provided in liquid form and can be used directly during paint formulation. Mixing ratios with pigments, fillers, and additives must be controlled to prevent precipitation or gloss deviation. Drying time typically ranges from 10 to 30 minutes under normal conditions and can be shortened by mild heating or increased ventilation. To ensure good adhesion, surfaces must be clean, oil-free, dust-free, and completely dry before application. Solvents used must be compatible with the resin, free of water or contaminants that may affect flexibility or film clarity.
3. TECHNICAL NOTES
When using solvent-based acrylic resin, pay attention to the hydroxyl value or acid number if used in 2K systems with hardeners. Reaction ratios must be calculated accurately to ensure durability and avoid defects such as chalking, cracking, or color loss. The resin should be stored in sealed containers, away from direct sunlight and high temperatures due to solvent volatility. During handling, gloves and masks must be worn, and work should be conducted in a well-ventilated area to reduce risks from solvent vapors. Avoid prolonged exposure to air, which can increase viscosity and reduce stability after opening.
