Polyether resins are a type of polyol with an ether-based chain structure, commonly used in polyurethane formulations to provide elasticity, hydrolysis resistance, and high thermal stability. Compared to polyester, polyethers are more stable in humid environments and less prone to embrittlement over time, especially in outdoor or high-humidity applications.
Polyether polyols are the primary material in soft foams, seat cushions, elastic PU coatings, and one- or two-component PU systems. They are the optimal choice when balancing softness, chemical durability, and fast processing across various applications. This is one of the product groups distributed by Vichem – the official distributor of Covestro in Vietnam.
1. PRODUCT APPLICATION
Polyether is widely used in the production of soft foams, car seat cushions, sofa padding, PU shoe soles, waterproof membranes, industrial floor coatings, and technical elastomers. In the construction materials industry, polyether-based PU coatings provide excellent water resistance, preventing cracking or embrittlement even after long exposure to humidity. In electronics, they are used as moisture-resistant encapsulants to protect circuits from thermal shock and harsh environments. Some advanced applications also use polyether polyols to create highly durable coatings in medical devices, bridge infrastructure, and technical adhesives.

2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Polyether resin is typically a low-viscosity liquid that can be easily mixed with isocyanates to form 2-component PU systems. For proper application, mix polyether with TDI or MDI in the correct ratio and monitor ambient temperature to ensure uniform reaction and prevent gas bubble formation. Ideal application temperature is between 20 and 30°C, with ambient humidity below 70% to maintain film stability. When used in foam, combine with blowing agents, catalysts, and surfactants per standard formulations to control expansion and material density. The reactive system should be applied and processed within a pot life of 5–20 minutes depending on the type.
3. TECHNICAL NOTES
Polyether is sensitive to oxygen and light when exposed to air for extended periods, so it should be stored tightly sealed, in a cool place, and away from direct sunlight. When mixed with isocyanates, ensure the system is dry and moisture-free, as water can react to form CO₂ gas, causing bubbles or surface defects. Viscosity may vary slightly with ambient temperature, so solvents or flow modifiers may be needed to control coverage and surface smoothness. Before mass production, always test with pigments, fillers, and additives to evaluate full system compatibility.
