Powder coating production process

Powder coating is a modern surface finishing technology that has become widely applied across industries. The production process of powder coating requires precision in every stage to ensure quality. Without strict control, the powder loses durability, colors become unstable, and product value is reduced. A standard production line delivers durable coatings, strong corrosion resistance, and eco-friendly performance. This article explains the detailed process of powder coating production, including technical notes and essential equipment.

POWDER COATING PRODUCTION PROCESS

Raw materials and their roles

Raw materials determine the properties and performance of powder coating. The binder resin is the most critical component, commonly epoxy, polyester, or hybrid systems. These provide adhesion and mechanical strength to the coating layer.

Pigments such as titanium dioxide or iron oxides ensure uniform color and excellent coverage. Fillers and additives help control gloss, improve flow, and reduce overall cost. Finally, curing agents create a cross-linked network that defines chemical and mechanical durability.

Mixing, extrusion and pre-crushing

The first stage is mixing all raw materials. Ingredients are blended in a low-speed mixer to create a homogeneous premix. Poor mixing can affect color uniformity and mechanical performance. The premix is then processed through an extruder at 90–120°C. Here, all components melt and disperse thoroughly. The output is a semi-solid sheet with high uniformity.

After extrusion, the sheet is cooled on a conveyor and pre-crushed into flakes. This step stabilizes the material structure and prepares it for fine grinding.

Fine grinding, classification and finishing

During fine grinding, flakes are processed by a hammer mill or pin mill to achieve an average particle size of 30–50 microns. Classification is essential to remove particles outside the target size range. The air classifier separates oversized and ultrafine particles, keeping only standard-quality powder.

Finally, finished powder is packed in PE bags or moisture-proof sacks, typically 20–25 kg per unit. Before shipment, quality control tests are carried out, including particle size distribution, flowability, color, gloss, electrostatic chargeability, and corrosion resistance.

TECHNICAL NOTES AND EQUIPMENT

Raw material quality and extrusion control

Raw material quality directly impacts the final product. Titanium dioxide should have high whiteness and excellent dispersion to achieve stable color. The binder resin must be chosen according to the application: epoxy for chemical resistance, polyester for outdoor durability. Extrusion is a key stage in the process. If temperature or pressure is unstable, resins may degrade or fail to disperse properly. Strictly controlling these parameters ensures product uniformity and enhances mechanical properties of the powder.

Moisture control, storage and main equipment

Powder coatings are highly sensitive to humidity. Exposure to moisture causes clumping and poor spraying performance. Therefore, storage areas must remain dry, with relative humidity kept below 50%. Moisture-proof and airtight packaging is mandatory to maintain long-term quality. The main equipment in the production line includes premixers, extruders, grinding systems, air classifiers, and packaging machines. The synchronized operation of these machines ensures process efficiency, stable particle size, and consistent product quality.

APPLICATIONS AND PROCESS SIGNIFICANCE

Powder coating is widely applied in various industries. In the automotive sector, it protects vehicle bodies and components from corrosion. In home appliances, it delivers durable and attractive finishes for refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. Structural steel and electronic products also benefit from its anti-rust and long-lasting properties.

A standardized production process helps manufacturers reduce product defects, save costs and time. High-quality powder is easier to apply, creates smooth and uniform coatings, and delivers superior durability. More importantly, consistent quality enhances brand reputation and competitiveness in the market.
