PEEK, PPS, PSU – Top 3 Heat Resistant Polymers: When to Choose Each?

In modern industry, the demand for advanced materials is higher than ever. This is especially true for applications requiring heat and chemical resistance. Heat resistant polymers like PEEK, PPS, and PSU have become increasingly popular. Each polymer carries unique traits, making it suitable for different needs. This article will help you compare, analyze, and select the right one.

OVERVIEW OF HEAT RESISTANT POLYMERS

Heat resistant polymers not only provide excellent mechanical strength but also maintain stability under high temperatures. This makes them a top choice in electronics, automotive, healthcare, chemical, and oil industries.

PEEK, PPS, and PSU are three prime representatives. Each comes with unique properties and application ranges. Their differences in thermal endurance, chemical resistance, electrical traits, and cost determine which material fits best for a product.

COMPARISON OF PEEK – PPS – PSU

Thermal resistance and mechanical strength

PEEK stands out in this category. It can work continuously at 250–260°C. It also offers remarkable mechanical durability, impact resistance, and load bearing strength. PPS has a lower heat limit, around 200–220°C. It keeps good stability but is more brittle than PEEK. PSU handles 150–160°C and retains elasticity, suitable for less demanding conditions.

Chemical and hydrolysis resistance

PEEK is seen as the most comprehensive choice in chemical environments. It resists strong acids and solvents, and it maintains properties even after repeated sterilization. PPS also performs well, especially against acids and alkalis. Yet it ages faster under hot water. PSU has moderate chemical resistance. It works in medical filtration and water systems but is weaker than PEEK and PPS.

Electrical traits and processing

PEEK combines heat resistance with outstanding insulation even at high temperatures. However, it requires advanced equipment with mold temperatures up to 400°C, raising production cost. PPS is easier to process. It can be injection molded or extruded using standard lines, ideal for mass production. PSU is even more convenient, as it only needs medium temperature machines while still offering accuracy. From a manufacturing view, PPS and PSU are more practical, while PEEK suits high-tech parts.

Cost and economics

PEEK is the most expensive, around 60–80 USD/kg. It fits critical products where maximum performance is needed. PPS has a mid-range price, about 25–35 USD/kg, making it popular in many industries. PSU is cheaper, 20–30 USD/kg, and thus widely used in consumer products.

WHEN TO CHOOSE PEEK, PPS OR PSU?

PEEK – For the harshest conditions

PEEK is the first choice in oil, aerospace, healthcare, and advanced automotive. It unites three decisive factors: very high heat tolerance, excellent chemical resistance, and lasting strength. Few polymers can match it in such severe environments. Its main drawback is cost, which restricts its use to premium applications.

PPS – Balanced between cost and performance

PPS is ideal for industrial use. It is found in automotive parts, pumps, valves, and anti-corrosion coatings. PPS resists acids, alkalis, and solvents well, while remaining easy to mold or extrude. Yet it is brittle and less stable in hot water. Users must check the actual working condition before applying.

PSU – Cost effective and easy to process

PSU is popular thanks to its low cost, good insulation, and easy processing. It is used in medical filters, electronic housings, and home appliances. Its processing does not require complex machinery, saving cost for mass production. Weaknesses include lower heat and chemical resistance compared to PEEK and PPS. PSU is best for moderate conditions where high performance is not critical.

REAL APPLICATIONS OF HEAT RESISTANT POLYMERS

PEEK

In healthcare, PEEK replaces metal in surgical tools and implants. It is biocompatible and endures sterilization, ensuring safety and long-term durability. In aerospace, it helps reduce weight while keeping structural strength, cutting fuel use and raising efficiency. These advantages make PEEK the most advanced heat resistant polymer for high-tech sectors.

PPS

PPS is widely used in automotive engines for seals, pumps, and valves. Its strong chemical resistance allows reliable use in harsh chemical industry settings. PPS coatings also protect tanks and pipes from corrosion, extending their service life. With balanced cost and performance, PPS is a trusted choice for large-scale industry.

PSU

PSU is chosen for medical filtration and water treatment due to stable hydrolysis resistance. It also finds use in electronics housings and household devices because of its insulation and affordable price. Its easy processing supports efficient mass production. While it cannot match PEEK or PPS in extreme performance, PSU still plays a vital role across many fields.
