Paint components: What’s inside a paint product?

Nowadays, paint is not just used for houses. It has become a technical solution across various industries like construction, technology, and automotive. However, achieving a perfect paint layer requires a harmonious combination of components and additives. Let’s explore what goes into a paint formulation with Vichem!

1. What is Paint?

Paint is a dispersion system or solution that, when applied to a surface, forms a solid film that protects and decorates. It helps prevent corrosion, resists water, enhances durability, and adds aesthetic value to surfaces.

Creating a high-quality product requires a precise combination of various components. Each plays an essential role in the overall performance. In this article, Vichem walks you through each one.

2. Main Components in Paint

A standard paint formulation typically consists of five primary groups of components: Film-forming substances, pigments, fillers, solvents, and additives. Let’s take a closer look at each of these below.

2.1 Film-Forming Substances

These are the core elements in paint, responsible for binding the other components and adhering to the painted surface. Once dried, they form a solid film with specific hardness, gloss, and durability.

The quality of the film-forming material determines the coating’s lifespan, weather resistance, and chemical resistance.

2.2 Pigments

Pigments provide color and opacity to the paint. They can be either organic or inorganic, depending on the desired aesthetic and colorfastness. In addition to basic colorants, paints may include Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂), Iron Oxide, and Carbon Black to enhance UV resistance and coverage.

Vichem supplies a wide range of pigments, including:

  • Coating and ink pigments
  • Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂)

2.3 Fillers

Fillers enhance viscosity, improve mechanical strength, control gloss levels, and reduce overall paint costs. The balance between pigment and filler content greatly impacts the paint’s coverage and application efficiency. Common fillers include: Calcium Carbonate, Barium Sulfate, Talc

2.4 Solvents

Solvents dissolve the resin and adjust viscosity, making the paint easier to apply. Once applied, the solvent evaporates, leaving behind a solid paint film. Solvents influence the drying speed, penetration, and leveling of the paint.

⚠️ Note: Some solvents can pose health risks. For instance, VOCs, benzene, and toluene may adversely affect the respiratory system. Always choose the appropriate solvent for your specific application and working environment.

2.5 Additives

Though added in small amounts, additives significantly influence special paint properties such as anti-foaming, anti-mold, UV resistance, gloss, and color retention. Popular paint additives include: Defoamers, Thickeners, UV stabilizers, Pigment dispersants
