Addressing common issues in adhesive production and application

Adhesives play a critical role in various industries, including woodworking, packaging, and construction. However, the production and application of adhesives often encounter issues such as poor adhesion, inconsistent drying times, or unstable quality. In this article, Vichem compiles common problems, analyzes their causes, and proposes effective solutions.

INTRODUCTION TO ADHESIVES

Adhesives are essential materials in industrial production and daily life. Serving the function of bonding two or more different surfaces, adhesives are widely used in industries such as woodworking, paper, packaging, footwear, construction, and handicrafts.

However, during the production and application of adhesives, users often encounter various technical issues. These problems impact the efficiency and quality of the final product. Early identification of these issues enables timely solutions, ensuring optimal performance and bonding durability.

COMMON ISSUES IN ADHESIVE PRODUCTION

Raw Material Quality

The quality of raw materials is a decisive factor in the stability and performance of adhesives. Inconsistent raw materials or those containing impurities can alter physical properties like viscosity, tackiness, or film-forming ability. High moisture content or incompatible raw materials may lead to phase separation or unwanted side reactions during storage.

Mixing Ratio Errors

Inaccurate calculations of component ratios can cause issues with adhesion strength, mechanical durability, and drying time. Even minor deviations in mixing ratios may result in a non-uniform adhesive system, complicating application and affecting the final product’s quality. Additionally, poor control of pH or temperature during reactions can deactivate catalysts or compromise adhesive stability.

Production Conditions

Environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity in the production area, influence solvent evaporation rates, film formation, and adhesive stability. Substandard equipment, uneven mixing, or uncontrolled mixing speeds can cause clumping, phase separation, or air bubble formation.

COMMON ISSUES IN ADHESIVE APPLICATION

Poor Adhesion

One of the most frequent issues during adhesive use is inadequate adhesion. This often stems from improper surface preparation, such as surfaces contaminated with dust, grease, or moisture. Selecting an adhesive incompatible with the substrate material also reduces bonding effectiveness.

Inconsistent Drying

Adhesives that dry too quickly before application or fail to dry completely within the specified time often result from improper solvent ratios. Environmental conditions, such as high humidity or low temperatures, can prolong drying times, impacting project timelines and quality.

Improper Storage and Handling

Adhesives stored under incorrect conditions—such as improper temperature, inadequate sealing, or prolonged storage—may experience sedimentation, phase separation, or gelation. Using expired adhesives can lead to issues like poor bonding, brittle films, or uneven application.

PVA – AN OPTIMAL SOLUTION FOR STABLE ADHESIVE QUALITY

Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) adhesives are recognized for their high stability and environmental friendliness. With excellent bonding strength, stable viscosity, and ease of application, PVA is an ideal solution for addressing common issues in adhesive production and use.

Key advantages of PVA include:

  • Stable Viscosity: Ensures precise application and uniform results.
  • Broad Material Compatibility: Effectively bonds wood, paper, fabric, and other absorbent materials.
  • Resilience to Environmental Conditions: Performs well in humid conditions and remains stable at ambient temperatures.
  • Safety and Health Benefits: Odorless and free of toxic solvents, making it suitable for crafts, furniture, and children’s toys.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Offers competitive pricing compared to Epoxy or PU adhesives while maintaining reliable bonding performance for most common applications.
