Luminy PLA – Heat-resistant bioplastic for molding and 3D printing

WHAT IS LUMINY PLA

Structure and key characteristics

Luminy PLA features high crystallinity, giving excellent heat resistance and dimensional stability. While regular PLA softens at 60 °C, Luminy keeps its strength above 100 °C. It also offers high transparency and surface gloss. During processing, the material maintains rigidity and mechanical balance, ideal for parts that require both function and appearance.

Product range

TotalEnergies Corbion divides Luminy into three main types: D-PLA, L-PLA, and compound blends. D-PLA has high crystallinity for heat-resistant or technical molded parts. L-PLA provides easy flow and clarity, perfect for 3D printing and thin films. Compound grades improve flexibility and compatibility with other polymers, giving broader processing options.

OUTSTANDING TECHNICAL PROPERTIES

After crystallization, Luminy PLA reaches a heat deflection temperature (HDT) of up to 120 °C—nearly double standard PLA. Parts remain stable under heat and pressure, preserving precise dimensions during molding. The improved HDT makes Luminy PLA ideal for technical parts requiring thermal endurance.

High mechanical stability

Luminy PLA has high stiffness and elasticity. It resists impact better than conventional PLA. Polymer flow stays stable without bubbles or discoloration during processing. This reliability ensures consistent quality for technical components, consumer goods, and light industrial parts.

Excellent processability

Luminy PLA is compatible with injection molding, extrusion, and 3D printing. Stable melt flow reduces production errors and energy use. Low viscosity helps fill complex molds easily and form smooth, glossy, accurate surfaces.

APPLICATIONS IN MOLDING AND 3D PRINTING

Injection molding

Luminy PLA performs efficiently on standard injection molding machines. Mold temperatures of 90–110 °C ensure optimal crystallization and better heat resistance. Short cooling cycles increase productivity.

Dimensional stability minimizes shrinkage after demolding, perfect for precision parts or heat-resistant packaging. Molded pieces show high gloss and sharp detail, releasing cleanly from molds without sticking.

3D printing

Luminy PLA is widely adopted in professional 3D printing. Strong layer adhesion and thermal stability deliver precise, durable models. Flow is smooth, preventing warping or delamination. The optimal print range is 190–220 °C, suitable for most FDM printers.

Printed surfaces are fine and easy to post-process by sanding, coating, or bonding. Luminy emits no unpleasant odor when heated, keeping workplaces safe and clean. With excellent accuracy and repeatability, Luminy PLA is trusted for industrial-scale 3D printing.
