Key Heat Resistance Indices of Plastics

In the plastics industry, heat resistance indices are critical factors that determine product quality. When exposed to heat, plastics may soften, deform, or lose mechanical strength. Without proper control, this affects both performance and service life.

To measure accurately, heat resistance indices have been developed and standardized in international testing systems. Among them, HDT (Heat Deflection Temperature) and Vicat (Vicat Softening Temperature) are the two most important. Each reflects a different aspect, helping engineers and manufacturers select the right plastic for specific applications.

HDT (HEAT DEFLECTION TEMPERATURE)

Definition and testing principle

HDT is the temperature at which a plastic specimen begins to deform under a defined load. It is not the melting point but the threshold where the material loses dimensional stability under stress. HDT is measured according to ASTM D648 or ISO 75, with standard loads of 0.45 MPa or 1.8 MPa. During testing, the specimen is heated at 2°C per minute. When it reaches the specified deflection, the corresponding temperature is recorded as the HDT. This method provides objective results that reflect the material’s ability to maintain shape under combined heat and load.

Technical significance and practical applications

HDT indicates the real working limit of a material. Plastics with higher HDT retain stiffness and shape under harsher conditions. This makes it an essential index for choosing plastics in applications requiring long-term static load resistance, such as engineering plastics or industrial coatings.

In practice, HDT is applied to test materials in automotive parts, electrical devices, and heat-resistant coatings. In surface finishing, it ensures that the coating layer can resist cracking, warping, or sagging when exposed to prolonged heat. This helps products maintain both performance and appearance.

VICAT (VICAT SOFTENING TEMPERATURE)

Definition and testing method

The Vicat softening point is the temperature at which a standard needle penetrates a plastic specimen to a defined depth. Unlike HDT, this index does not measure structural deformation but focuses on surface softening. Testing follows ASTM D1525 or ISO 306. Conditions include loads of 10N or 50N and heating rates of 50°C/h or 120°C/h. When the needle reaches the required depth, the corresponding temperature is the Vicat point. This method reflects the onset of surface softening under light thermal stress.

Technical significance and practical applications

Vicat is useful for products under little or no load. It shows the point at which the material begins to soften, predicting early changes during heating. This is important for thin plastics or decorative applications, where thermal stability directly affects aesthetics. Vicat testing is often applied in extrusion, molding, and thin film evaluation. In coatings, it helps identify the risk of early softening in primers or topcoats. Manufacturers can then adjust formulations to minimize risks and achieve the desired performance.

COMPARISON OF HDT AND VICAT

HDT and Vicat are both standardized indices of plastic heat resistance, yet they differ in nature. HDT evaluates deformation under load, while Vicat indicates the onset of surface softening during heating. This distinction allows each index to serve a unique technical purpose.

In practice, HDT is preferred for products that must endure both load and temperature over long periods, such as industrial coatings or high-performance plastics. Vicat, on the other hand, suits thin, lightweight materials or those requiring thermal processing, where early softening is critical. Using both indices together enables manufacturers to select the right plastic for each application. It also supports engineers in balancing performance and cost. As a result, products can meet technical demands while maintaining durability throughout their service life.
