How to use and store coating: secrets for a durable and beautiful finish

A beautiful paint finish is not solely dependent on choosing high-quality paint. Proper usage and storage techniques are the key factors determining durability, visual appeal, and application efficiency. This article will guide you through the professional process of using and storing paint effectively.

HOW TO USE COATING CORRECTLY

To maximize the performance of your coating, it’s essential to follow the correct process from surface preparation to application. Below are the key steps to consider.

Surface Preparation

Before painting, ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or mildew. For previously painted surfaces, remove any peeling or flaking coating and sand the surface lightly. Avoid painting on excessively damp surfaces, as this can reduce adhesion and lead to peeling.

Mixing and Diluting Coating Properly

Gently stir the coating before use to ensure uniform consistency of its components. Avoid vigorous stirring, as it can create air bubbles that compromise the smoothness of the finish. If dilution is necessary, use only the solvent recommended by the manufacturer. Never mix water with solvent-based coatings or dilute beyond the specified ratio.

Applying Coating in Layers with Proper Timing

Always apply a primer coat first to enhance adhesion and protect against alkali in walls. Topcoats should be applied after allowing the primer to dry for at least 2–4 hours, depending on the paint type and environmental conditions.

Avoid painting during rainy or highly humid conditions, as these can cause peeling. Conversely, excessively hot weather can cause coating to dry too quickly, leading to uneven color or patching.

HOW TO STORE UNUSED COATING

During a project, it’s common to have leftover paint. Proper storage ensures the paint retains its quality, minimizes waste, and remains usable for future applications.

  • First, seal the paint can tightly immediately after use. An improperly sealed can allows solvent evaporation or surface drying.
  • Store paint cans in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or excessive heat. Keep them away from open flames, stoves, or generators, especially for solvent-based paints, which pose a fire hazard.
  • If the paint has separated, inspect it before reuse. Gently remix it, but discard the paint if it remains non-uniform or develops an unusual odor to avoid technical issues.

TIPS FOR SELECTING COATING AND ADDITIVES

Achieving a flawless paint finish requires more than just proper application techniques. Choosing the right raw materials—such as paint, resins, pigments, and additives—is equally critical. Consider the following additives to enhance your paint formulation:

  • Base Resins (water-based or solvent-based) for primers and topcoats.
  • Hardeners for two-component (2K) paints, improving film hardness and durability.
  • Inorganic Pigments and Fillers with good dispersion properties for vibrant, long-lasting colors and cost efficiency.
  • Dispersants, Anti-Settling Agents, and Defoamers to ensure a stable formulation.

CONCLUSION

A stunning paint finish depends not only on the product but also on proper usage and storage techniques. With just a few technical steps, you can extend the lifespan of your coating, prevent peeling, and reduce maintenance costs.
