In the paint and coating industry, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) act as solvents that dissolve resins and adjust viscosity. However, high VOC content leads to the release of toxic gases during evaporation, posing serious risks to both health and the environment. To move toward sustainable technologies, many manufacturers are now adopting green additives and bio-based solvents to minimize emissions while improving coating performance and durability.
IMPACTS OF HIGH VOC SOLVENTS
When released into the atmosphere, high VOC solvents contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) — two major causes of air pollution. In industrial settings, VOC vapors can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory system, and prolonged exposure may lead to chronic health issues. Beyond health concerns, VOCs increase fire risks, emit unpleasant odors, and negatively affect productivity. Therefore, replacing high-VOC solvents with green alternatives has become an essential direction for the modern paint industry.

GREEN ADDITIVES AS ALTERNATIVES TO HIGH-VOC SOLVENTS
Waterborne Polyurethane
Water-based polyurethane systems are among the most popular eco-friendly coating options. The polymer structure dispersed in water reduces VOC levels to near zero while maintaining high gloss and mechanical strength. When combined with Bayhydrol A resins and Bayhydur XP hardeners, these coatings achieve excellent transparency, hardness, and chemical resistance. Waterborne PU is widely used in wood coatings, metal finishes, and industrial applications, gradually replacing solvent-based systems without compromising durability or appearance.
Waterborne Acrylic
Waterborne acrylic systems contain low VOC levels, dry quickly, and retain color stability under harsh conditions. Compared with solvent-based paints, waterborne acrylics emit less odor, are easier to clean, and are far more environmentally friendly. Their UV and weather resistance make them ideal for decorative coatings, wall paints, and high-end exterior finishes. When combined with green dispersants or rheology modifiers, waterborne acrylics deliver smooth, uniform surfaces that meet international green-building standards.
Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC)
DMC is a new-generation solvent characterized by ultra-low toxicity and VOC content, recognized as a “green solvent” in industrial coatings. It can directly replace toluene, acetone, or MEK while maintaining excellent resin solubility and coating clarity. DMC evaporates rapidly, has minimal odor, does not cause irritation, and is notably safe for workplace environments. Because of these advantages, DMC is widely used in automotive coatings, industrial paints, and inks, helping manufacturers comply with strict VOC control regulations.
Bio-based Esters (Bio-based Solvents)
Bio-based esters are derived from natural sources such as lactic acid, glycol, or ethyl lactate. These biodegradable compounds exhibit low toxicity, reduce solvent odor, and improve working conditions. Beyond serving as solvents, they also enhance coating gloss, smoothness, and corrosion resistance. Bio-based esters are particularly suitable for premium wood coatings, interior paints, and decorative finishes, supporting the industry’s ongoing shift toward zero-VOC production.

APPLICATIONS IN THE COATING INDUSTRY
In wood and furniture coatings, waterborne PU produces transparent, color-stable, and low-odor films. The industrial coating sector increasingly adopts DMC to replace hazardous solvents while maintaining excellent coverage and chemical resistance. For architectural and decorative paints, waterborne acrylics combined with bio-based esters yield smooth, fast-drying, and environmentally safe finishes. These innovations not only help manufacturers meet green compliance standards but also enhance product performance and value.
