As the paint industry shifts toward a greener and more sustainable direction, controlling technical parameters becomes more important than ever. Among them, the electrical conductivity of the paint solution is a seemingly minor indicator but has a significant impact on stability, application performance, and coating aesthetics. Even a slight fluctuation in this index can cause an entire production batch to lose uniformity, reduce durability, and create defects during coating.
WHAT IS THE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF A PAINT SOLUTION?
This is the ability of a solvent to allow electric current to pass through due to the presence of dissolved ions. Ions such as Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻, or SO₄²⁻ usually come from dilution water, resin, or additives. They reflect the purity and stability level of the paint system.
This value is measured in µS/cm and usually ranges from 500–3000 µS/cm. High conductivity means the solution contains many ions, making it more prone to side reactions or coagulation. Conversely, low conductivity causes poor resin dispersion, and additives therefore cannot perform effectively. Maintaining the index within the optimal range helps the paint system remain stable and uniform for a long time.

THE EFFECT OF ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY ON PAINT QUALITY
Effect on system stability
The stability of a paint solution depends on the electrical charge of resin particle surfaces. When conductivity increases, ions in the system neutralize these charges. This causes resin particles to lose repulsion and aggregate. At this point, the paint tends to separate, change viscosity, and reduce storage stability.
If the electrical conductivity of the paint solution is too low, electrostatic repulsion weakens, particles disperse unevenly, and sediment easily forms at the bottom. This alters the ratio of pigments and additives, causing color deviation or sedimentation. Keeping the index stable helps the paint system maintain color consistency, smoothness, and long-term preservation.
Effect on application performance
In electrostatic coating, the electrical conductivity of the paint solution directly affects coating efficiency and adhesion. When the value is too high, strong current causes sparking, discharge, or air bubbles on metal surfaces. The dried coating may appear blistered or uneven.
Conversely, when conductivity is too low, paint particles have difficulty adhering, leading to material loss and poor coverage. The coating tends to be thin, easily scratched, and below technical standards. Maintaining conductivity within the proper range ensures smooth, glossy films and minimizes application defects.
Effect on color and film surface
In water-based paint systems, conductivity also influences pigment dispersion. A high-conductivity environment increases ionization, causing color deviation or streaking. When the index is stable, pigments are evenly distributed, resulting in bright, glossy, and vivid colors. Stability also helps accelerate drying and improve the coating’s outdoor durability.

FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF A PAINT SOLUTION
Many factors affect the electrical conductivity of a paint solution, with the most important being water quality, resin type, and additives. Hard water containing Ca²⁺ or Mg²⁺ ions significantly increases conductivity; therefore, deionized or RO water should be used. Acrylic, epoxy, and alkyd resins have different ionization levels, influencing the total system charge.
In addition, surfactants or amine salts with strong ionization properties may also alter the conductivity index. Storing the paint in a sealed environment, avoiding solvent evaporation or CO₂ absorption from the air, helps maintain stable conductivity and ensures long-term paint quality.
