Desmophen and Desmodur – The Perfect Pair Creating a PU Coating

PU (Polyurethane) paint is considered a premium solution for many industries. This coating features high gloss and superior surface protection. To achieve such quality, the resin base and hardener components must work in perfect harmony. Desmophen and Desmodur – two materials from Covestro – form the ideal combination to accomplish this. When reacting, they create a strong polymer network that makes the coating hard, glossy, and resistant to fading.

DESMOPHEN – POLYOL RESIN FOR A STABLE BASE LAYER

What is Desmophen

Desmophen is a Polyol resin developed by Covestro for two-component PU systems. It serves as the main binder that creates adhesion and forms the coating film. With its stable polymer structure, Desmophen produces a clear, smooth, and easy-to-apply finish. The product line includes types such as Desmophen A, 650, and 670, each suitable for specific applications.

Outstanding properties

Desmophen resin offers excellent adhesion and film-forming ability. The coating made from Desmophen is transparent, color-stable, and resistant to yellowing. This material provides elasticity, prevents cracking, and offers strong moisture resistance. Desmophen is also easy to mix with solvents, helping control viscosity and drying time effectively.

DESMODUR – ISOCYANATE HARDENER CREATING DURABLE BONDS

Characteristics of Desmodur

Desmodur is a high-grade Isocyanate line from Covestro. It reacts with the Polyol in Desmophen to form urethane linkages. These bonds give the coating high hardness and excellent chemical resistance. Desmodur cures quickly, improving production efficiency and coating stability.

Common Desmodur types

Desmodur N75 is an HDI trimer known for its non-yellowing and outdoor color stability. Desmodur L75, a TDI-based product, is used for high-gloss wood coatings. Other variants such as VL or IL are applied in specialized industrial coatings. Each type offers specific advantages in gloss, hardness, and drying time, depending on the application.

Technical advantages

Desmodur helps create hard, durable, and scratch-resistant coatings. The resulting film withstands solvents, UV radiation, and mechanical impact. When mixed correctly with Desmophen, it forms a clear, stable surface with long-lasting performance. As a result, PU systems maintain gloss and protective ability for many years.

THE PERFECT COMBINATION OF DESMOPHEN AND DESMODUR

Desmophen contains hydroxyl (-OH) groups that react with isocyanate (-NCO) groups in Desmodur. This process forms a durable and flexible urethane network. The resulting coating has high gloss, impact resistance, and superior abrasion protection. The reaction remains stable when humidity and temperature are properly controlled.

The NCO/OH ratio determines the hardness and flexibility of the coating. If the ratio is incorrect, the film may become brittle or too soft. Therefore, controlling the component ratio is a key factor in production. When mixed accurately, the Desmophen–Desmodur system delivers a bright, even surface with strong adhesion. This is why the duo is considered the benchmark in modern PU coating technology.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS IN INDUSTRY

PU coatings made from Desmophen and Desmodur are widely applied in many industries. In wood finishing, they create a glossy surface that enhances the natural grain. For metals and automotive use, the coating provides high mechanical strength and excellent corrosion resistance. In outdoor structures, the system resists UV rays and significantly reduces yellowing.

In artificial leather and PU plastic, this combination forms a soft, flexible, and scratch-resistant film. Technical coating manufacturers also use it for chemical-resistant finishes or industrial flooring systems. Thanks to flexible formulation options, Desmophen and Desmodur meet both technical and aesthetic requirements.
