Control of alkalinity in the fixing stage – The key to color fastness

In textile dyeing, the fixing stage determines color durability and wash resistance. When pH is not properly controlled, dyes may hydrolyze or detach from the fiber. Alkalinity in the fixing stage is therefore a critical technical factor. Keeping pH within the optimal range ensures deeper, more stable shades and reduces fading after washing.

THE ROLE OF THE FIXING STAGE IN DYEING

Dye fixation and the role of pH

The fixing stage helps dyes bond firmly with the fiber surface. For reactive dyes, pH activates the reaction between reactive groups and hydroxyl groups in cellulose. Once the reaction is complete, the color becomes resistant to washing and light exposure. An alkaline medium is essential to make this reaction efficient and stable.

Alkalinity and reaction during fixation

Alkalinity in the fixing stage should be maintained between 10.5 and 11.0. This pH range allows a balanced reaction between the dye and fiber. When pH is too high, hydrolysis occurs, and dye bonding decreases. If the medium is less alkaline, the reaction remains incomplete, producing dull or uneven shades. Stable pH ensures consistent color and long-lasting fastness.

Unstable pH and practical consequences

Excess alkalinity in the fixing stage can decompose dyes and form unwanted by-products. The result is uneven or patchy color across the fabric. Conversely, low alkalinity leaves unreacted dye in the bath, which easily washes away. Both conditions reduce washing and rubbing fastness. A strong alkaline environment can also damage cellulose fibers, making the fabric rough or stiff.

Modern dye houses install online pH sensors for real-time monitoring. The system records data and automatically adjusts the soda dosage in the dye bath. This approach keeps pH stable and minimizes batch-to-batch variation. Manual checks using handheld meters or test strips are still recommended for comparison. Proper pH control in dyeing helps stabilize processes and increase dye fixation yield.

Using buffer systems for pH stability

Phosphate or carbonate buffer systems help maintain alkalinity in the fixing stage. They minimize pH fluctuation caused by temperature or chemical dosing. As a result, the fixation reaction proceeds evenly, improving shade uniformity. This approach also reduces color variation across large production runs.

Regular pH testing and timely adjustment

Monitoring pH at the beginning, middle, and end of the fixing process is essential. If pH rises above target, add diluted acid to lower it. When pH drops, adjust by adding soda to restore the alkaline range. Routine testing keeps the process consistent and reduces off-shade risks.

Using specialized alkalinity-control additives

Neutralizing additives are formulated to stabilize pH without interfering with dye chemistry. They are effective with reactive, vat, and sulfur dyes. With controlled alkalinity, dye fixation efficiency increases, producing deeper, more durable shades. This method is widely used in modern textile finishing lines.
