Comparison of Calcium-Zinc and Traditional Stabilizer

Stabilizers are essential additives in PVC production, preventing degradation during processing. When heated, PVC can release hydrochloric acid, compromising product quality. Stabilizers maintain PVC’s molecular structure, ensuring durability. This article compares two common stabilizer systems—calcium-zinc (Ca-Zn) and traditional systems—to help manufacturers make informed choices.

TRADITIONAL STABILIZER SYSTEMS

Traditional stabilizers, primarily lead-based compounds, have been used in PVC production for decades. They offer excellent long-term thermal stability, weather resistance, and superior electrical insulation, making them ideal for applications like electrical wires and cables.

However, lead-based stabilizers have significant drawbacks. Their toxicity poses health risks with prolonged exposure, and their production and waste disposal cause severe environmental pollution. Additionally, they reduce PVC transparency, impacting aesthetics, especially in food packaging applications.

CALCIUM-ZINC STABILIZER SYSTEMS

Calcium-zinc (Ca-Zn) stabilizers were developed as a safe, eco-friendly alternative. Widely used in both rigid and flexible PVC, they meet diverse manufacturing needs. Ca-Zn stabilizers are non-toxic, complying with safety standards for food packaging, children’s toys, medical blood bags, and drinking water pipes.

These stabilizers offer high transparency, ensuring superior aesthetic appeal for PVC products. They integrate seamlessly into production processes due to excellent compatibility with PVC and resist sedimentation, maintaining consistent product quality. Additionally, Ca-Zn systems simplify manufacturing, reducing operational time and costs.

COMPARISON OF CALCIUM-ZINC AND TRADITIONAL STABILIZER SYSTEMS

Criteria Calcium-Zinc System Traditional (Lead-Based) System
Toxicity Non-toxic, safe for health and approved for food contact. Toxic, harmful to human health and the environment.
Environmental Impact Eco-friendly, meets strict standards like Vinyl 2010. Causes environmental pollution, especially in production and waste disposal.
Performance Good thermal stability, high transparency, excellent aesthetics, and strong PVC compatibility. Good thermal stability but poor transparency and PVC compatibility.
Cost Higher due to complex formulations and specialized co-stabilizers. Lower but restricted by environmental regulations.
Applications Toys, medical products, food packaging, clean water pipes, drinking bottles. Conduits, electrical cables, opaque PVC sheets, wires.

TRENDS AND REGULATIONS

Globally, particularly in Europe, there is a shift from lead-based stabilizers to alternatives like Ca-Zn, driven by initiatives like Vinyl 2010 and Vinyl Plus, which aim to phase out lead stabilizers in PVC production.

Ca-Zn systems are fully adopted in clean water pipes and electrical cables, with expanding use in conduits and profiles. Growing consumer awareness of health and environmental concerns is pressuring manufacturers to adopt safer materials. Ca-Zn stabilizers pose no health or environmental risks, making them highly appealing for manufacturers aiming to meet international standards and market demands.
